About 45 feet tall stupa “Chang Chub Chorten” (Bodhi Chaitya “बोधिचैत्य” in Nepali/Sanskrit) has been rebuilt in Khiraule village which lies in Mahakulung Rural Municipality ward no. 1 in Solukhumbu district. Chang Chub Chorten that symbolizes Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment under the bodhi tree is one of the eight different types of stupas which is also known as The Stupa of Enlightenment.
The very ancient stupa in Khiraule was partially destroyed by the mega earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude that hit Nepal on 25 April 2015. Mrs. Anglhamu Sherpa of Khiraule was the first person who wished to rebuild the stupa. She announced to donate Rs. 950,000/- (Nine lakhs fifty thousand rupees) to rebuild the stupa in the memory of her beloved son, Late Mr. Chhimi Dawa Sherpa who was killed on 25 April 2015 at Everest Base Camp in an avalanche triggered by the mega earthquake.
Following Mrs. Anglhamu’s announcement to donate, all the villagers got excited and came forward to rebuild the stupa. The very first mass meeting was called on December 16, 2017 (2074/09/01 B.S.) in a hotel in Kathmandu for the people from Khiraule who are temporarily staying in Kathmandu. Mr. Lhakpa Kitar Sherpa and Mr. Tenjee Sherpa took initiative for this task and collected Rs. 898,000/- (Eight lakhs ninety-eight thousands rupees) from the very first mass meeting. The collected amount was more than what was initially expected. Mr. Ongchhu Sherpa, a businessman in Kathmandu who originally came from Khiraule donated Rs. 600,000/- (Six lakhs rupees) in the meeting and gave a positive signal to support more in the future if the rebuilding process goes well. He stood as the most important backbone for the rebuilding of the stupa who donated about 35 percent of the total cost.
